Although a majority of cashew nuts consumed in the country are grown in the hill regions, a few show that they can be grown in the lowlands as well. Cashew trees are also grown commercially in the Andhra Pradesh region.
It is dry season and the rain-fed crops are dry. There is a situation where the farmers who have grown the crops are expressing their plight because the crops have become dry.
In the rural Kakinada area of East Godavari district, most of the farmers grow crops that are not related to rain-fed farming in the plains. Keeping this in mind, farmers have taken cashew cultivation a step forward. Now, in the dry season when the rain-fed crops have withered, cashew mango plantations have developed a new art. In this region, the cultivation of cashew mangoes on hundreds of hectares is common.
Wherever one looks, the fields are busy with cashew cultivation. Especially on the Narsipatnam road but with the abundance of cashew plantations, the good aroma permeates the entire area. However, it is noteworthy that cashews are mainly grown by tenant farmers here. Farmers make profits by focusing on cashew plantations which provide high income with low cost and no labor due to rain.
Local farmers said that even if they expect a small insect, it will not affect the crop too much. The most important component of these cashew trees is the pulp of the cashew fruit. Farmers also sell them in the markets as green chickpeas. After drying, these become cashews and give farmers a bountiful harvest. Farmers sell cashews based on the current market price. However, farmers are happy that growing cashews which is suitable even in the dry season will bring them profits.
