CHENNAI: The council meeting of the Alandur municipality witnessed protest and heated arguments over the alleged mixing of sewage with drinking water in the area. When the council of the municipality met on Thursday, DMK councillor (Ward 15) Veeraragavan Ramesh complained that sewage water was getting mixed in many neighbourhoods including Saraswathi Nagar, Buvneswari Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Balaji Nagar and Sakti Nagar in his ward.This had been posing health hazard and inconvenience to the people, Ramesh pointed out.Demanding immediate intervention of the authorities, Veeraraghavan sat in dharna in front of chairman A Duraivelu and an argument ensued over resolving the issue. Leader of the opposition, VNP Venkataraman (AIADMK) said people of the municipality had been experiencing hardship because of lack of basic amenities and demanded quick steps to fulfill the aspirations of the people. Kutti Ramadas (AIADMK) said workers were not properly closing the trenches that were dug up for laying pipes to provide metro water connections.Muthu (DMK) asked the authorities to consider putting up barricades in the Thillai Ganga Nagar subway as it witnessed frequent mishaps.Others wanted urgent steps to solve the drinking water problem prevalent in many areas of the municipality.In his reply, chairman Duraivelu faulted erratic power supply as an important reason for lacunae in the water supply system.Officials have been asked to rectify the sewage mixing problem within three days, he informed.
