With the city’s vehicular population increasing at an alarming rate, experts have suggested steps to check this trend.
V Ravichandar, urban infrastructure expert and chairman, Feedback Consulting said, “A long-term solution lies in improving the quality of public transport and more so in upgrading the bus system to attract more commuters. More direction-oriented buses or minivans that would take people onto arterial roads could be introduced.”
He added that many western countries have come up with innovative strategies to reduce vehicular numbers.
‘Collect parking charges from people’
“Many nations implement congestion charges and have hiked parking fee. This is a sure shot deterrent for people to invest in private vehicles. Further, a feasible immediate solution is that the city corporation could collect parking charges for parking on roads at nights. This would be an additional cost people would have to factor in while buying the second or third car, increasing the total cost of car ownership considerably,” he explained.
