Udhagamandalam(TN): Residents of a town near here walked backwards for nearly 3 km to protest the dilapidated condition of roads and Ooty-Kakkanala National Highway, their economic lifeline.
About 2,000 residents of Gudalur on Tuesday walked backwards complaining that despite several representations, the authorities had failed to repair the highway.
The protest procession started from the Municipality office and ended at new bus stand, covering nearly 3 km.
The business establishments in the area also downed their shutters for three hours in the morning during the agitation and decided to observe a 12-hour hartal in the area if the roads and the highway were not repaired within one week.
The future course of action, including a 24-hour hartal and a 72-hour hartal, would be finalised after one week, one of the organisers said.
Students, teachers and members of nearly 59 social organisations participated in this unusual form of protest.
