Hyderabad: Students on Wednesday continued their agitation demanding resignation of Hyderabad Central University's Vice Chancellor Appa Rao. Some of the protesters, who tried to forcefully enter the university, have also been detained.
"We have been protesting in a very democratic way asking for justice for Rohith. There is a commission set and the case is going on. He (V-C) came back and sneaked in under police protection. When we protested they brutally lathi charged us and have turned this university into a prison," the students said.
A lot of damage has also been caused due to these protests. A majority of 857 non-teaching staff and 380 faculty did not work during the shut down. Around 1 lakh man hours were lost due to the shut down.
There were no classes and even libraries were shut following protests over the alleged suicide of PhD scholar Rohith Vemula. Over Rs 3 crore was paid towards salary, even when there was no productive activity.
Meanwhile, the controller of examination has also walked out of the academic council over differences of opinion.
Vice Chancellor Appa Rao rejoined office in March, two months after he went on leave following Rohith Vemula's suicide. He had come under fire for his handling of the events leading up to Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula's death.
He was at the centre of the controversy with students of the university demanding his resignation.
The 26-year-old Rohith Vemula who hanged himself in Hyderabad Central University campus in January, was suspended from his hostel by the HCU administration in August 2015 for allegedly attacking an ABVP leader.
