Housing needs support

Housing Minister V Somanna on Monday said that houses constructed by the state for economically weaker section should be provided with support services like water, electricity and sanitary conditions by the respective agencies without creating problems.

He was addressing a gathering organised to mark the World Habitat Day on Monday.  World Habitat day is observed on the first Monday of every October.

Somanna said, “Just building a house is not enough. We need other basic facilities. I have instructed the officers concerned to resolve the hurdles while providing these facilities.”

He said if the government had provided better infrastructure in rural areas and on the outskirts, people would not want to migrate to bigger towns and cities. Aromar Revi, director, Indian Institute of Human Settlements said: “India is poised to attend Rs 1 crore economy. Sixty per cent of this growth is being driven by the cities, of which 100 cities are contributing 40 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product.”

“The challenge is to balance the requirement of large cities as well as the development of smaller towns and villages,” he added.
