DHARWAD: In the wee hours of Wednesday, three inmates of Gouri Shankar Hostel, in Saptapur near here, were injured seriously following a clash between them and unidentified persons over food. According to police sources, 13 persons have been charged in the incident that took place at about 2 am. Five have been arrested by the local police. The injured have been shifted to the civil hospital.The incident is said to have occurred when a group of outsiders barged into the Gouri Shankar Hostel and demanded food from the mess in-charge. They assaulted the mess in-charge with rods, sticks and roof tiles when he denied them food.Police have nabbed the main accused Sharanu Nagannavar while he tried to escape. Three associates of Sharanu were also nabbed.Hubli Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain and Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Dr K Ramachandra Rao visited the hostel on Wednesday afternoon. Jain while addressing the media confirmed the events. Terming the assault as illegal, the DC said five persons were nabbed and directions have been given to hold them under police custody until further directions. Security will be provided at the hostel to see that such incident do not repeat, he assured. Police Commissioner Dr K Ramachandra Rao too stated that the accused have been booked under section 307 of IPC. A special team led by ACP Sanjeev Patil and PSI Sulfi has been formed to arrest the other eight accused and hold a detailed probe into the incident. Dr Patil told Express that the injured have been hospitalised and investigation is on.One of the accused, Anand Belagali, who was injured has been admitted to KIMS, Hubli for treatment.When Express contacted Belagali at KIMS, he said that while he and his friend were returning home late at night, police stopped them near Dharwad Railway Station.
