Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda called upon the youth to play a constructive role in the nation's progress.
Addressing a gathering after unfurling the national flag at an Independence Day function in Sonipat, Hooda said, "It is a matter of pride for us that dreams of freedom fighters are being fulfilled in our state.
We need to keep this going and the youth should play a constructive role in the progress.
During the past eight years, the state government has laid stress on inclusive growth and has implemented welfare schemes for all sections of the society including schedule castes, backward classes, farmers, workers, women, businesspersons, employees and others.
"There is an environment of peace in the state and benefits of development are reaching the common man," he said.
During the celebrations amid constant drizzle, Hooda inspected a guard of honour and witnessed march-past of jawans from Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban and Police Department Sonipat.
He also felicitated freedom fighters with shawls.
He said, there was record production of over 172 lakh tonnes of foodgrain in the state due to the government's pro-agriculture policy.
"Under the Priyadarshini Awas Yojna, houses will be built for 2 lakh poor families in villages. In urban areas, 1.5 lakh houses will be constructed for the urban poor.
"An affordable housing policy has been prepared for providing low cost flats for common people under which 1.25 lakh flats will be constructed in the next five years," Hooda said, adding that the government will provide 2.5 kg of pulses to BPL families at the rate of Rs 20 per kg from August 20.
Meanwhile, there were reports of heavy rains playing a spoilsport in Independence Day celebrations at some places in the state.
