Homestay attack case: Two accused wrongly booked

Two memorandums submitted to Mangalore Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh on Wednesday said two bystanders had been wrongly booked in Saturday’s Morning Mist homestay attack case.

Taranath Alva, a 45-year-old taxi driver arrested in the case, was not at the scene when young men and women partying at the homestay were beaten up, his father Babu Alva claimed in a memorandum. Babu Alva told Express that his son had just returned home after dropping a passenger. As news of the attack spread, out of curiosity he visited the homestay which was in close proximity.  Babu Alva, who is the president of a 40-year-old local association, Youth Centre Padil, had included signatures of presidents of different clubs, vouching for his son’s character and asserting that there were no cases filed against him.

In another memorandum, leaders of D K Jilla Kottari Samaja Sudharaka Sangha sought the release of Venugopal Karmar, an autorickshaw driver. On Saturday, he had joined the crowd making a beeline for the homestay. He had parked his vehicle at the parking stand in Padil, they said. They told Express that Alva and Karmar were arrested based on  images captured by cameramen. Meanwhile, State Women Commission Chairperson C Manjula visited Morning Mist home stay on Wednesday.
