New Delhi: On Sunday, country trio, the Dixie Chicks bagged five Grammy's including the top three - album, record and song of the year.

It is the first time in 14 years that all three top titles have been swept by one group.

But it all began on March 10, 2003 when Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines, a native of Texas, at a concert in London said, “Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

The public criticism of the US President George W Bush on the eve of the 2003 invasion of Iraq hit headlines and snowballed into a controversy and calls for a boycott of the band's albums and concerts.

The group even received death threats. In 2006, a documentary titled Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing chronicled the band's attempts to cope with the fallout.

Then they wrote a song, Not Ready to Make Nice, in reaction to the fallout - now voted as the Song of the Year at the Grammy's.

“People are using their freedom of speech tonight. We get the message,” says Natalie.

Some might question the political implications of their win at the Grammy's. But the fact remains, that the Dixie Chicks spoke against President Bush's decision to invade Iraq. And the same Dixie Chicks swept five Grammies including the song of the year.

What's your reaction?
