Beijing: Heavy rains across two southern Chinese provinces have left at least 29 people dead, including seven killed in landslides, state media reported on Saturday.
The rains began battering parts of Fujian and Guangdong provinces on Tuesday.
By the weekend, disaster crews were delivering tents, quilts and rice to flood-hit areas in central and northern Fujian province, where 22 people had died and 50,000 evacuated, the reports said.
In Guangdong, seven people died in landslips in Meizhou city over the past few days, the Xinhua News Agency said.
Some areas in Fujian received more than 20 centimetres of rain, the China Youth Daily reported.
Xinhua said the two provinces are expected to see more rain, with five heavy storms predicted for the region this month.
In light of the forecasts, the Guangdong government warned local officials to ensure the safety of participants in the traditional dragon boat races that are held this time of year.
Heavy rains afflict southern China every year around this time.
The China Daily, citing the head of the state flood control agency, said all told 59 people have died in floods this year and 11 are still unaccounted for-a lower than average toll.
In addition, the newspaper said, the rains have caused $1.6 billion of economic losses.
In the southern province of Guangdong, the streets of Chayang town were covered in water 4 metres deep, after rains forced two hydropower stations to discharge waters from reservoirs, China Daily said.
