A Chennai school faced backlash after the video of a “controversial” speech by a motivational speaker on the campus surfaced on social media. The video purportedly showed the speaker propagating “superstitious and anti-science” statements to the students.
Mahavishnu from the Paramporul Foundation was invited to deliver a motivational talk at a government school in the Mylapore area on the occasion of Teacher’s Day On September 5. He, however, delved into spiritual themes like the cycle of rebirth, sins and karma. He claimed in his speech that mantras can be used to bring rain and transport from one place to another. When a school teacher objected to this, he replied to her in an intimidating manner.
The video sparked outrage among people and politicians alike. Social media users argued that school is a place for education and not spiritualism.
A protest was held in front of Ashok Nagar Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai demanding action for allowing spiritual awakening classes in the school. The school’s head teacher Tamilarasi was transferred to Tiruvallur district on Friday.
School Education Department CEO Mars held talks with protesters and assured action. Following the uproar on social media, Education Minister Anbil Mahesh also said that stringent action will be taken against people involved in this.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered the School Education department to come up with guidelines for hosting any events in government schools and hold programs to promote scientific temperament among students.
