KOCHI: Expressing concern over the pathetic state of the pond in which the chief priest (Periya Nambi)of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple takes his customary dip, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Thiruvananthapuram District Collector and the Corporation to take immediate efforts to clean the ‘Mithranandapuram Kulam’ adjacent to the temple.A petition was filed by A Ravi Kumar of Thiruvananthapuram and four others seeking a directive to clean the pond. “The steps, which can be taken to clean the pond should be reported to the court on next Wednesday,” the court held.Issuing the directive, the court observed that it was shocking that those who are in the affairs of the temple do not take steps to clean the pond. The court asked the authorities to file a statement regarding the alternative arrangements in this regard. It is a customary ritual practised by the main priest that he should take a dip in the water at 3 am before conducting the rituals. The court perused the photograph of the pond. The court observed that the government has not taken any step in this regard. The court also directed the Collector and the Corporation Secretary to suggest alternative arrangements for priests to take their holy dip till the pond is cleaned.
