Chandigarh: CCTV footage of five key locations from Chandigarh in the stalking case involving Haryana BJP chief’s son have been finally recovered. Police sources said the footage shows Vikas Barala and his friend chasing the woman in a car.
Chandigarh DGP Tajender Luthra told CNN-News 18, “We have retrieved CCTV footage of five cameras that have captured the entire incident.” On Monday, the police claimed that the footage had gone missing.
Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala has addressed his son's stalking of the girl and has claimed that the victim was "like his daughter".
"She is like my daughter. A probe is going on and it should happen. Whatever action is necessary will be taken by the police. There is no pressure on them. The BJP supports women safety," said Barala.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police added that it will not hesitate to add non-bailable provisions in the case.
The 29-year-old daughter of a top bureaucrat alleged that she was followed by Barala's son Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar on Friday night. Barala's SUV pulled up close to her car several times in a bid to block her way.
While the woman’s complaint and a Facebook post narrating the incident caused a massive stir, the Haryana BJP unit on Monday blamed the victim for driving “so late in the night.”
"The woman should not have gone out at 12 in the night. Why was she driving so late? The atmosphere is not right. We need to take care of ourselves," BJP state vice president Ramveer Bhatti told CNN-News18.
Senior Superintendent of Police Eish Singhal on Tuesday told PTI that they were investigating the matter with an "open mind" and were taking legal opinion on several issues pertaining to the case.
"Chandigarh police is a professional investigating agency. We are conducting a fair investigations. There is no pressure on us of any kind," Singhal said.
The Congress attacked the Haryana and the central governments on Monday for allegedly trying to cover-up the case. “The cases filed by the police definitely raise a question. This is clearly a case of abduction. The Centre is trying to stall the case. It was not registered under proper sections of the IPC,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said.
The Congress leader asked what is stopping the Centre from acting when the Chandigarh police comes directly under the Home Ministry.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Anil Jain, in-charge of the party's Haryana affairs, on Tuesday ruled out the resignation of its state unit chief. "Subhash Barala has nothing to with the Vikas Barala case. The law is taking its own course. There is no reason for Subhash Barala's resignation," Jain said in a statement.
