Film: Guru Sishyan (Tamil); Cast: Sathyaraj, Sundar C, Hema Malini, Santhanam and Saranya; Direction: Shakthi Cidambaram; Music: Dheena
Guru Sishyan is yet another comedy flick by Sakthi Cidambaram with all the masala elements imbibed in it. With the comedy-cum-action combination of Sathyaraj and Sundar C, glamour contribution from Hema Malini, emotional contribution from Saranya and comedy from Santhanam, the film has it all to lure the 'C' category audience.
Satyaraj’s special ‘Lollu’ dialogues are very well used to criticise contemporary issues like the godman sex scam, actors becoming politicians and various other hot topics.
The story of the film is woven around the feeling of vengeance between the characters of Satyaraj and his estranged wife Saranya.
The central character of the film, Guru Moorthy (Sathyaraj) is fondly called as Kaalu (meaning leg). The reason behind this nickname which when explained by Satyaraj in the film mocks ultimate star Ajith’s nickname Thala (meaning head).
Kaalu leads a rich life by financing money for the people in the Rajapalayam town. He is willing to do anything for money and he doesn’t show courtesy to anyone.
On the other hand, another lead character Eeti (Sundar C), a young fellow is willing to fool anybody for money. Eeti joins Kaalu’s gang and over a short span of time he gains the confidence of Kaalu and emerges as his close aide.
At this point, a new character Mahalakshmi (Saranya) enters. On seeing her face, Kaalu loses his temper and in a bid to cool him down, Eeti harasses her a lot in public. To top it all, Eeti even provokes Kaalu to kill Mahalakshmi to get rid of her. When Kaalu decides to kill her, Eeti comes to her rescue. This creates a twist in the story.
Later Eeti reveals that he is the younger brother of Mahalakshmi, who is the estranged wife of Kaalu.
A misinterpreted murder of Kaalu’s sister happens to be the reason for their split. After realising the truth, Eeti challenges Kaalu that he will make him realise his sister's innocence before his oncoming wedding day.
Who wins the challenge, who the real culprit behind that murder is, and how he gets punished forms the rest of the story.
Even though the story has a lot of scope for seriousness, the director chose to maintain a comedy flow throughout which affects the transition of the film.
A separate comedy track by Sandhanam including the heroine Gayathri (Hema Malini) did not gel well with the story. At times, double meaning dialogues create uneasiness among family audience.
Like many other Tamil flicks, Guru Sishyan is also a hero-dominated subject in which the heroine has prominence only in duet songs.
The glamour quotient of Hema Malini and an item song of Kiran are included to lure the young audience. The songs of the film composed by Dheena have nothing attractive to them.
Overall Guru Sishyan is a comedy flick in distress.
Rating: 2.5/5.
