KOLAR: The Hulibele Gram Panchayat president was arrested on charges of raping a minor girl on Thursday. The incident which took place on Wednesday afternoon, came to light on Thursday morning following a complaint to the police.According to sources, Muniyappa (58) of Athigirikuppa village in Bangarpet taluk of Kolar district, has been charged with raping an eightyearold girl of the same village. Muniyappa allegedly befriended the girl who was grazing sheep and raped her near a pond in the village on Wednesday. The girl informed her parents about the incident on Wednesday evening.When Muniyappa came to know about the turn of the events, he allegedly attempted to settle the issue within the village. Accordingly, a panchayat was arranged in the Kothandarama Swamy temple, where he offered to hush up the incident by paying money.However, the police rushed to the spot when some of the villagers informed them. Her parents lodged a complaint with the Bangarpet police, who registered a case of rape and atrocity against Muniyappa and took him into custody.Muniyappa had been conferred an award by the government recently for keeping the village clean.
