CHENNAI: In a glittering function held at Vel Tech Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University, Avadi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu K Rosiah distributed a total sum of Rs1.2 crore as Vel Tech Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarship to 184 engineering students including 66 girls.Vel Tech Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarship Scheme was introduced three years ago by R Rangarajan, Founder-Chancellor, Vel Tech Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University with the twin objectives of national integration and barrier-free access to affordable higher technical education. The Scholarship provides free tuition and hostel fee to meritorious students. Thirty-eight girls and 30 boys who emerged as the top three students in each branch in Vel Tech, Vel Tech Multi Tech Dr Rangarajan Dr Sakunthala Engineering College and Vel Tech High Tech Dr Rangarajan Dr Sakunthala Engineering College, affiliated to Anna University received `17.5lakh as scholarships.R Rangarajan, Founder-Chancellor, Vel Tech Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University, presided over the function in the presence of Dr Sakunthala Rangarajan, Vice-Chairman and KVD. Kishore Kumar, Director, and Rangarajan Mahalakshmi. K, Chairperson and Managing Trustee welcomed the gathering.Addressing the gathering, Rosiah said the mission of university and educational institutions must be to improve and enhance the quality of education with an objective to develop the spirit of creativity. Providing infrastructure and establishing high-tech labs were imperative for any educational institution, he said and added that the efforts taken by VelTch Dr RR & Dr SR Technical University to provide quality education, nurture good conduct and character, and instill in its students a spirit of commitment and creativity were laudable. He concluded by talking about how one should be aware that there is a life-long learning to do. How one must learn to face the end and how one must learn to live together. This, he said was how youth would reach great heights.
