New Delhi: While some may term it as a fallout of the gruesome serial killings in Nithari, the fact is that the Government seems to have finally woken up to the need of proper enforcement of child rights.
The Centre on Friday set up a National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and appointed Magsaysay awardee Shanta Sinha as its the chairperson. The Commission will also have six other members.
The Commission has been set up to ensure proper enforcement of child rights
and the effective implementation of laws and programmes relating to children.
The Commission has been empowered to inquire into complaints and take suo motu cognisance of matters relating to deprivation of child rights.
It would also keep a check on the non-implementation of laws providing for protection and development of children and non-compliance of policy decisions, guidelines or instructions aimed at their welfare.
It can announce interim relief for children and can issue directives for remedial measures to the state governments.
