New Delhi: The government on Monday denied a crackdown on pornographic websites, saying that the denial of access to the sites was only "temporary" and a prelude to the creation of a regulatory body.
"It was because of the Supreme Court's observation. The case is going on in the Supreme Court since 2013. The government has issued a advisory to the Internet Service Providers to take appropriate action," sources in the Telecom Ministry said.
Users have not taken kindly to the move which they say encroaches upon their personal space.
"Porn ban is anti-freedom, impractical, not enforceable. Politically not very smart too. avoidable. Let's not manage people's private lives," author Chetan Bhagat tweeted.
The apex court took cognizance of the matter after a lawyer filed a PIL to block porn sites.
"I appreciate what the government has done by blocking 857 porn sites," lawyer Vijay Panjwani said. "The government has taken some steps after three years. There is no right to watch illegal things even in private space. I've given examples of sexually explicit acts/ obscene acts in the court," he said.
"The ISPs can block them overnight. There is technology to do this. The petitioner cannot list all porn sites. The government itself must look for them," he said, adding that one cannot indulge in "such acts" even in the four walls of the room.
