“The ministers in the state government are more interested in lining their pockets than finding solutions to people’s problems. Lakhs of Malayalis are working in the West Asian countries, and they are bringing foreign currency worth crores of rupees. But the state government is set to exploit them,” Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has said.
He was inaugurating a protest march organised here by the CPM against the recent cancellation of Air India flights from state to Gulf countries and hiking of fares.
The protest march, which was heading to the Air India office at the airport, was blocked by police at the airport gate. “Realising Air India’s nonchalant attitude towards the expatriate Malayalis, other airlines are also cashing in on the situation by hiking fares. As the state government is not coming forward to solving the issues, the Central government should take up the issue urgently,” said Achuthanandan.
He also said that the state and the Central governments are supporting the injudicious fares. All ministers from the state in the Centre should unite and fight for the cause,” VS said.
CPM state secretariat member Baby John, MLAs Jose Thettayil, S Sarma, K V Abdul Khader, A M Arif, and MPs C P Narayanan and P K Biju spoke on the occasion.
