THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Magician Gopinath Muthukad was presented with the prestigious International Merlin Award, billed as 'Magic's Oscar,' at a ceremony held in New Delhi on Thursday.The award was presented by the president of International Magicians Society (IMS), Tony Hassini. Instituted by the IMS, which has over 37,000 professional magicians as members, the award was given to Muthukad for his outstanding contributions to the art.''I believe that there were several moments in all our lives that could only be regarded as sheer magic. For me, this is the strongest of them all. This is one of those rare moments that compel me to believe in real magic,'' Muthukad, who became the second Indian to win the coveted award after P C Sorcar Jr, said after receiving the award.The function was attended by leading magicians from across the country and political leaders such as Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation Vayalar Ravi, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K V Thomas, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister T K A Nair.The Merlin Award becomes the latest addition to the long list of achievements of Muthukad at the state, national and the international levels.
