Go all out against Quattrocchi, says Congress
Argentine court set Quattrocchi free as India failed to appeal against the court's earlier order.

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday said all legal processes should be invoked and enforced against Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi after the Italian businessman was set free by the Argentine authorities and he was allowed to return to Italy.

The Bofors accused was given the green signal to leave by the Argentine authorities hours after a court in El Dorado shot down the CBI's plea to extradite him to India.

Sensing a political attack on itself and the UPA Government over the development, the Congress was quick to react to the development, saying India should explore all possible legal options to get Quattrocchi in India to face trial in the Bofors case.

Quattrocchi had been detained in Argentina some six months back on the basis of an Interpol alert and he successfully fought the legal war against the CBI in the El Dorado court and managed to wriggle out. The court set Quattrocchi free following India's failure to appeal against the court's earlier decision not to extradite him.

In New Delhi, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the Congress has nothing to say in respect of a detailed judicial process in a foreign country, which resulted in Quattrocchi walking free.

"The procedure has gone in great detail over six months and the entire matter is between the agencies of that country, courts and the accused," he said.

Since the matter is a 'favourite whipping stick’ for the Opposition against the Congress for the last 20 years, all legal processes which are available should be invoked and enforced, he said.
