TIRUCHY: The child welfare committee (CWC) on Thursday intervened to stop a child marriage and handed over the minor girl to the district collector.A 16-year-old girl of Karur was to marry Muthuraman (30), a coolie from Vaiyyampatti, on Thursday. On Wednesday, the chil helpline was tipped off about the wedding by an anonymous caller. It passed on the information to the CWC. Subsequently, T Jayantee Ranee, a CWC member, along with the district welfare officer and the police, visited Vaiyyampatti and stopped the marriage. On Thursday, she was handed over to the collector. “Since the girl expressed her willingness in pursuing her college education, she will be taken care of by the CWC. We are searching for a suitable college for her,” Jayanti said.
