An 18-year-old girl, who sold flowers and puja items at the Bateshwar in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, saved four youths from drowning in the swirling Yamuna River as they were pulled into the deep side during the Ganesh visarjan ceremony. The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the youths from Firozabad ventured into deep water while immersing a Ganesh idol.
According to a TOI report, on-lookers raised an alarm after spotting the four boys struggling in the water and Mohini Goswami, a class 10th student of Government Girls Inter College (GGIC), jumped into the river to save the boys. Her exceptional swimming skills helped her to bring the struggling youths safely to the shore.
Mohini’s bravery and selfless act earned her praise and admiration from local residents and officials, prompting the manager of the nearby ancient Shiva temple, Ajay Bhadauria, and chief priest, Rakesh Vajpayee, to recommend her for a reward from the administration.
According to locals, Mohini’s father died of an illness 10 years ago. Mohini, an only child, helps her mother, Anita run the household by selling flowers and puja items on the ghat. Mohini aspires to join the police force after finishing her studies. “They were going to die; I couldn’t let this happen in front of me,” she said.
Anita’s mother said she was proud of her daughter’s heroic deed. “Mohini has been fond of swimming since childhood. Despite my attempts to discourage her, she always managed to make time for it. Little did I know that one day she would save four lives. I am proud of her,” she was quoted by TOI as saying.
