The Veterinary Department in Ghaziabad is incorporating dogs in its livestock census, which will help keep tabs on the stray dog population in the city.
The census, which began on September 1, involves 95 teams operating in both urban and rural areas to collect extensive data on various animals.
This information will be updated on the India Livestock App, aiming to provide a more complete picture of the region’s animal population. The last livestock census was conducted in 2019 and included only cows, buffaloes, goats, camels, and other domestic animals. This time, the livestock census will also include dogs.
The veterinary department has undertaken this step to obtain an accurate count of stray dogs and to develop more effective management plans for them. To oversee the counting process and ensure the accuracy of the data collected, 27 designated supervisors are managing 95 teams, including 45 members assigned to urban areas and 50 to rural regions.
The District Panchayati Raj Department and the Urban Development Department are also assisting in this campaign. According to Veterinary Officer Dr SP Pandey, the livestock census will facilitate better planning for vaccination and other schemes in the future.
“The census will cover 16 types of animals, including stray dogs, as well as cows, buffaloes, camels, goats, pigs, donkeys, sheep, mules, horses, chickens, yaks, elephants, rabbits, and mithuns,” Dr SP Pandey said.
During the census, details such as the animals’ ages, their owners’ Aadhaar card numbers, economic status, and animal husbandry practices will be recorded. Additionally, animals will be tagged on-site, and all this information will be uploaded to the India Livestock App.
