CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Minister for Textiles Dayanidhi Maran following allegations that Sun Network, owned by his brother Kalanidhi and in which he himself reportedly has a stake, benefited from kickbacks paid by a Malaysian company in return for spectrum allocation in its favour, during his tenure as Telecom Minister.“The prime minister should ask for Mr Dayanidhi Maran’s resignation,” Jayalalithaa said, responding to a query on what the PM should do with regard to Maran being linked with the 2G scam. She also said the minister must face legal action.Though the DMK is a key constituent of the UPA government, the party has been maintaining a studied silence over this issue.CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, meanwhile, has called for a serious investigation into the involvement of Maran in the 2G scam. “From what I have seen of the case, it requires serious investigation,” said Karat, when asked about Maran’s role in the 2G Scam. Karat, who was in Chennai on Wednesday to take part in his party’s state committee meeting, also met ally and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat. He said he met the AIADMK chief not merely to congratulate her but that they discussed a number of issues. When asked about his party’s stand on the Lokpal Bill, Karat reserved comment and told reporters that a central committee will soon decide on whether or not the Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India should be brought under the purview of the Lokpal Bill.
