Gang Of Ghosts: A comedy is never complete without a tragic element, says Satish Kaushik
Satish Kaushik's 'Gang of Ghosts' is adapted from the hit Bengali film 'Bhooter Bhabishyat' and is a horror comedy.

New Delhi: What happens when you put personalities from different time periods together? And what if they are not even alive? The upcoming film 'Gang of Ghosts', adapted from the hit Bengali film 'Bhooter Bhabishyat' promises to deal with this subject in a hilarious manner.

In the city to promote the film, director Satish Kaushik, along with the cast members Anupam Kher, Sharman Joshi, Mahie Gill and Meera Chopra talked about being a part of the new genre in Hindi films -- 'ghost comedy'.

"The original film, written and directed by Anik Dutta, was immensely popular in West Bengal. We have made some reasonable changes to the script, as called for by the setting of the film," said Kaushik.

When asked about horror films traditionally being associated with sex, Kaushik replied, "I have always made family films, which are still shown on satellite television. This is because they were always clean," he said.

"The comedy in this film is not slapstick or situational. The characters themselves are hilarious; people will fall in love with them," said Kaushik.

Kaushik however added that the ghosts in the film and their situation is a metaphor about the changing social structure in large cities. "A comedy is never complete without a tragic element. And in 'Gang of Ghost', there is a very deep social issue about the development of the cities," he said.

"In the movie it has been shown how the emerging huge buildings, which are being made by destroying old and abandoned structures are forcing ghosts to leave those places.

So in a way the movie also talks about those who are shunted out because of development," he added.

Talking about his upcoming projects, Kaushik said that his "comedy bag was full". "I want to explore more as an actor. I am waiting for some very witty roles, where I can justify my talent. The kind of talent I have I think I must do something different from comedy," he said. "I want to do some characters which are dramatic and have emotional depths," he said.

Kaushik's last notable role was in 2011, when he starred as Father Pascal in multi-starrer 'Rascals'. He would be next seen in a negative role in Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Lakshmi', which is based on human trafficking.

"In 'Lakshmi' I have played a negative character. I have never played this kind of role in the past," he said.

'Gang of Ghosts', which is slated to hit the theatres on March 21, stars Anupam Kher, Sharman Joshi, Mahie Gill, Rajpal Yadav, Chunky Pandey and Saurabh Shukla in the leading roles. The movie also features newcomer Meera Chopra, who is a distant cousin of actresses Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra.
