JEYPORE: Crops worth crores of rupees were destroyed following heavy gale and rain in Jeypore block on Tuesday night. Wind at the speed of 80 km per hour swept Dhanpur, Kaligam, Badajena, Hadia, Amabaguda, Jayantigiri, Umuri and Ekamba panchayats of the block and damaged standing rabi paddy crop over 5,000 acres. Thousands of houses were also damaged.Electricity supply to as many as 200 villages was disrupted as poles were uprooted at several places. Town areas of Jeypore were also affected as there was no power and water supply due to the rains. Official sources said crop damage would be ascertained only after normalcy is restored.Twenty incidents of gale accompanied by heavy rain have been recorded in Jeypore block since May 1. The worst affected have been the farmers.
