HYDERABAD: After much delay, the flyover at the congested Gachibowli Junction is all set to be opened for motorists next week. The flyover will allow free flow traffic on Old Mumbai Road, Outer Ring Road to Hi-tec City and help to avoid traffic snarls at the Gachibwoli junction where a few thousand vehicles criss-cross during peak hours. The flyover which was proposed to be completed in early 2008 was delayed by more than three years due various hurdles like shifting of water, sewerage lines and electrical poles and delay on part of the contractor. HMDA officials said the flyover costing about Rs. 21.60 crore is 1,450 m long and 15.5 m wide, with a four lane carriageway and 1.5 m wide central median. The service roads of 14.10 m length on either side of the flyover have also been completed. The unique feature of the flyover will be the first use of 120 W LED streetlights replacing the 250 W High Pressure Sodium Vapour Lamps. On the flyover portion, a total of 81 light poles have been installed at a distance of 30 m.Officials said energy saving would be to the tune of 50 to 60 percent by use of LED lights, around Rs. 31,000 per month
