Ahmedabad: Four persons were arrested on Friday for allegedly beating up a BJP councillor on suspicion that he was behind the demolition of an illegal construction, police said. Kaushik Jain, who represents Shahpur Ward, was allegedly attacked on Thursday by Chandresh Vyas (44), Sanjay Vyas (28), Nirav Joshi (28) and Hiren Patel (35) when he was on his way to attend a function, they said, adding the accused snatched Jain's gold chain worth Rs 50,000.
According to police, the men suspected that Jain was behind the civic body's action to raze an illegal structure, belonging to Vyas, in the city. They were booked under sections 114 (abettor present when offence is committed), 294 (b) (uttering obscene words in or near any public place), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of IPC and 135 (1) of the Gujarat Police Act.
The four accused were produced before a local court which remanded them in police custody till Saturday.
