Even as the Cauvery remained parched, the Corporation has made arrangements to set up artificial fountains along the river bed for those celebrating the Aadiperukku festival here.
Last year, the Cauvery was flowing to the brim during Aadiperukku. This year offered a stark contrast, thanks to low storage in Mettur dam. The fact that Karnataka was yet to release water as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal has further compounded the problem.
Hence, this year, devotees would have to be content with sprinkling water from the make-shift fountains on the river bed. The Aadiperukku festival was observed to thank the river for irrigation and drinking water.
In an effort to help the people celebrate the fest in the traditional manner, the City Corporation has come up with an idea of creating separate artificial fountains for men and women.
A canal was also being dug in the middle of the dry Cauvery to enable devotees to partake in the customary floating of garlands.
