District Collector Ajay Yadav on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the State’s first biogas plant that will generate electricity to power streetlights in Arcot Municipality. The plant, which would be constructed under Self Sufficiency Scheme (SSS) at a cost of `45 lakh, is likely to function from mid September this year.
The district administration and the administration of Arcot Municipality have initiated the process which would be implemented by MAILHEM Engineers Pvt Ltd based in Pune.
The merchant associations, philanthropists, councillors of municipality and Arcot MLA R Srinivasan have pooled in `23.10 lakh out of `45 lakh, while the remaining amount was funded by the District Rural Development Agency under SSS. “At present, the waste is high and electricity generation is low in the State. Using the waste to generate electricity is the ideal solution to tackle the present scenario,” said the Collector.The scheme would help the municipality save `9 lakh expenditure per month, he said.
Yadav said Arcot municipality should become a model municipality in the State in implementing such innovative schemes.
Commissioner of the municipality S Parisatham said,“We will use the electricity generation from the unit to power 150 streetlights in wards 18, 19 and 20.” Regional director of Municipal Administration S Shanthi and Arcot MLA R Srinivasan, project director of DRDA N Srinivasan also spoke.
