Foreign Service officer wanted dowry
Amit Kumar Mishra allegedly called off marriage after woman’s family said they can’t pay him Rs 1-crore dowry.

Darbhanga: An Indian Foreign Service Officer has been accused of refusing to marry his fiancée after her family told him that they cannot pay the Rs 1 crore dowry he had demanded.

A police complaint against Amit Kumar Mishra was registered at the Lehariasarai police station on Sunday on Rachna Kumari’s statement.

The complaint was registered after the National Commission for Women (NCW) wrote to a senior police official. The complaint was lodged under various sections of IPC and Dowry Act against ten persons, including Mishra and his father Deochandra Mishra.

The matter came to light in 2004 when Rachna approached the NCW seeking action against Mishra for refusing to marry her after engagement following her family's failure pay dowry.

Following the complaint the superintendent of police of Darbhanga investigated the matter and submitted a report to the NCW.

The FIR was registered after the NCW found the charge prima facie true and asked the police to proceed in the matter.
