CHENNAI: When it comes to special occasions like the birth of a baby or weddings or even a birthday, everyone thinks of going that extra mile to gift something unique and self-created. Kalpataru, the hobby centre at ECR, has come up with a set of unique workshops for the first time in Chennai. Neha Shah from Mumbai will be conducting six different and unique workshops on polymer clay flowers, polymer clay figures, trousseau packing, baby shower packing, exotic paper quilling envelopes, punch craft and quilling frame. All course material will be provided for the benefit of art lovers. For Shah, the craft began as a hobby when she would design beautiful products for wedding trousseau and baby showers. She would then either gift them to her family members and relatives or sometimes charge them if the materials for the item was beyond her budget. Says Shah, “As the meltdown began, I realised that not many were buying materials from shops that offered such products readily. They found it too expensive, and even postponed their wedding and curbed their baby shower to just a few members of the family. It is then that my family suggested that I should take advantage of the craft that I had learnt.”Shah has been running classes for 10 years since and offers it to an wide age group of participants from 14 – 75 years. Shah continues, “My husband suggested I should teach the art I know to other housewives and young enthusiastic girls so that they can make things for their family members or have small sales to earn some extra money. This way, he said it would help our family too by enabling me to buy more material for my classes.” Kalpataru is conducting these workshops in the heart of the city in Adyar and Vepery from January 17-23.
