Roger Federer makes a winning comeback at the Shanghai Masters after a seven week lay-off due to injury.

New Delhi: World Number One Roger Federer, defending champion at the season ending Shanghai Masters, is keen to end the year on a high note.

Federer, out of action for seven weeks to nurse his injured ankle, played smoothly and effortlessly against Argentine David Nalbandian in his opening match to win the first set easily.

Facing break point on his serve in the fifth game, Nalbandian lost just three of the next 19 points to level the match at one set each.

The Argentine led 3-1 in the third set, but Federer made a strong comeback to win the set and the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

After the match Federer said that it felt great to be out in the middle again after a long injury layoff.

"I am charged up and would love to perform well here," said the world number one.

The day's other round-robin match saw in-form Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia take on Argentina's Guillermo Coria.

Making his Masters debut, Ljubicic put up a clinical performance to win the first set was never going to be difficult with shots like these.

Ljubicic smashed 25 winners to Coria's 11 to win the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
