Facebook opens up Messenger to non-Facebook users
The new feature was added to the latest version of Facebook Messenger app for Android.

New Delhi: To take on other popular messaging apps, including WhatsApps that rumours say Facebook is eyeing to buy, Facebook has enabled users to create a Facebook Messenger account without a Facebook account and using only a name and phone number.

The new feature was added to the latest version of Facebook's Messenger app for Android. This new log in ability is expected to come to the Facebook Messenger app on other platforms as well.

The Facebook-free login for Messenger was made possible because the Messenger app is used for private communication and is not dependent on other Facebook public features such as the news feed and therefore similar logins may not be extended to other apps such as the Facebook Camera app.

The ability to access Facebook Messenger will not only help Facebook to compete with other messaging apps but it can also attract new users into the Facebook flock.
