TIRUNELVELI: The Central expert panel committee, on Wednesday held a day-long detailed discussion with engineers of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited about safety equipment, support systems and technical aspects of the Koodankulam nuclear plant.Of the 15 members, nine members — A E Muthunayagam, pro chancellor, Noorul Islam University, M R Iyer, former director of Division of Radiation Safety at International Atomic Energy Agency, A K Pal, professor at Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kannan Iyer of IIT-Bombay, S K Mehta, former director of Reactor Group at the BARC, S K Sharma, former chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, K Balu, former director of Nuclear Waster Management Group at BARC, S M Lee, Raja Ramanna Fellow at Safety Research Institute, Kalpakkam, and W Stephen Aruldoss Kanthiah, former director (operations) of Heavy Water Board, visited the plant on Tuesday.Sources said that the team discussed various key aspects, including radiation, seismologic analysis, etc.The panel members are expected to study the physical aspects, buildings of the reactor, and control and safety systems of the plant on Thursday. V Santha, oncologist and Chairperson of Adayar Cancer Institute also conducted a study. Central panel coordinator Chellapa said that one of the members, D V R Murthy of IIT-Madras, was involved in studying the aftershocks of the recent Sikkim quake. He also said that seismologist Harsh Gupta is expected to visit the plant on Thursday.
