CHENNAI: An engineer and a contractor were arrested for negligence after a detonator used for pipe-laying left two children injured in Tambaram on Saturday. Sources said the `161 crore underground drainage project was in progress in Tambaram municipality. Works for digging trenches and laying of pipes were in progress for the last few days. The rocks found during the digging were being removed by detonating them. But the debris had not been cleared. On Saturday, children in the locality were playing there, when a detonator that was lying among the debris exploded injuring J Alex Joseph (11) and A Harini (9). They were taken to a private hospital. The houses nearby were also damaged. The Selaiyur police registered a case and arrested the engineer Velmurugan and contractor Govindaraj.`3 Lakh-worth Copper Bars StolenBurglars broke into a steel company in Kodungaiyur and decamped with copper bars worth `3 lakh on Saturday. Sources said Senthil, a resident of Paper Mill Road in Perambur, ran the company on Tiruvallur Road. On Saturday, the employees left around 10 pm. On arriving for work the next day, they found the asbestos roof prised open and copper bars weighing 350 kg stored for making stainless steel utensils stolen. Senthil lodged a complaint at the Kodungaiyur police station.
