BHUBANESWAR: As the Bhubaneswar Traffic Police discovered its own version of the chart-buster “Kolaveri di” to mark the Road Safety Week, the State Government sounded caution that drunk driving could lead to annulment of driving licence. At the 23rd National Road Safety Week function, Chief Secretary BK Patnaik said errors by inexperienced drivers have led to most of the road mishaps. A drivers’ training centre will be opened at Chhatia soon. Transport Commissioner Surendra Kumar who emphasised the use of speed governors said the nation loses ` 1 lakh crore annually due to accidents. Special Secretary, Commerce and Transport Department, Gagan Behari Dhal said, everyday the State records 10 accidents while 80 per cent bus drivers drink and drive. The Government is mulling cancellation of DLs for drunk drivers. Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Traffic found its signature song in a parody of the “Kolaveri di.” “Why dis speedveri di,” was played to the commuters to convey why speed and drunk driving claim lives and how accidents can be prevented by avoiding use of mobiles. During the whole week, the police used innovative methods to sensitise drivers. A Traffic Park was created to make people aware of different aspects of road safety. People thronged the park while a photo exhibition on road safety by photo journalists was a major highlight.
