Relief works on a war-footing in these taluks

Along with 142 taluks, seven more taluks have been declared drought-hit in the state, informed Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa.

He told reporters after launching new bus services between Shimoga and Bhadravati in the city on Sunday that 19 taluks have been identified as drought-hit in the first list. Seven additional taluks, namely Sagar, Sorab of Shimoga, Joida, Haliyal, Mundagodu of north Canara and Khanapur and Yellapura of Belgaum have been declared  drought-hit. Relief works have been taken up on a war-footing in all these taluks. Ministers have been asked to visit their respective districts to monitor the drought works, he added.Eshwarappa criticised the Union government for ignoring the demand of the state government to extend monetary help. “Even Central Ministers Sharad Pawar and Jairam Ramesh, who visited the state to review the situation, ignored the demands,” he said.

He said that the state government will continue its effort to get more funds from the Centre and that he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar.
