CHENNAI: The Tiruvallur police arrested the driver of a tipper lorry on Wednesday that rammed in to a tiffin centre near Velliyur village killing three teenagers and injuring five.The police identified the lorry driver as P Raj Kumar (24), a native of Kunnaiyur village in Vengal.Kumar allegedly confessed that he was in an inebriated state while he was at the wheel. Kumar claimed his steering wheel got suddenly locked, leaving him little room for manoeuvre. To avoid hitting the central median, he swerved, but ended up ramming the tiffin centre on Tuesday.The impact killed three teens — N Munnusamy (18) of Kumukampedu, K Mohan Das (18) of Kadarvedu and R Raj Kumar (18) of Kumukampedu Colony — on the spot. Three others — R Thambidurai (18) of Punnapakkam, S Selvakumar (18) of Pagalmedu and M Sabapathy (18) of Kumukampedu — sustained grievous injuries and were admitted to Government General Hospital in Chennai for treatment. Two others — Nagaraj (18) of Thamaraipakkam Koot Road and Raj Bharath (13) of Velliyur — were admitted to Government Hospital at Tiruvallur. The police intend to arrest the owner of the lorry as well.“The driver said his steering wheel got locked during the incident. We will definitely include the owner as one of the accused,” according to V Vanitha, Superintendent of Police, Thiruvallur District.
