Doping issue: Call to sensitise sportspersons
A one-day national conference on Natural Medicine and Sports was organised at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Lakshmi Bai National College of Physical Education, Kariavattom on Wednesday.

Pioneering the research on the role of alternative medical practices in enhancing performance of sportspersons and also in aiding speedy recovery from injuries, the one-day national conference on ‘Natural Medicine and Sports’ was organised at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Lakshmi Bai National College of Physical Education, Kariavattom, here on Wednesday.

 The conference, attended by experts from various medical systems, was inaugurated by former national shooting coach and Dhronacharya awardee Sunny Thomas. The conference was attended by eminent practitioners of various systems like  Naturopathy, Reflexology, Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga, Kalaripayattu and Acupuncture. In his inaugural address, Sunny Thomas said that there is lack of knowledge among the Indian sportspersons regarding  doping. Many of the athletes unknowingly fall into the trap of doping. Some of the medicines which sportspersons use for treating various general ailments like common cold or for healing wounds fall in the category of dope substances.

 Regarding felicitation of coaches of sportspersons who participated in London Olympics, he said that it is a rare scenario in the country where the coaches are felicitated for the performance of their wards. ‘’Coaches are behind making athletes successful and  popular,’’ he felt. The event was presided over by former DGP Jacob Punnose.

 The occasion also saw felicitation of  Olympians Renjith Maheswary, V Diju, K T Irfan and Mayookha Johny. They were presented with mementos.

The senior coaching faculties Udaya Kumar, Prof P J Sebastian, A Bose, S Balachandran Nair and  Jose Mathew were presented with ‘ponnada’ as part of ‘Guru Vandanam’.  Prof Sunny Thomas and Indian football team fitness trainer Pradip Dutta were also honoured in the function.

Sports Council president Padmini Thomas, BCCI Doping control coordinator Dr Vece Paes, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs secretary M Sivasankar IAS, Sports and Youth Directorate director Amit Mallick IFS were also present.
