CHENNAI: A DMK worker in Saidapet and two of his associates were arrested on Thursday for allegedly holding a ‘katta panchayat’ and assaulting a woman after she demanded the return of a large sum of money she had given them.In her complaint, S Sabira (35) of Hospital Road, Villupuram alleged that she loaned Rs 4 lakh to M Naga (45) and G Stalin (42) of Saidapet on March 6.As per a police release, when Sabira demanded that her money be returned, they summoned her to the DMK office on Alandur Road.There, the party’s secretary of ward 135, N Krishnamurthy (43) held a ‘katta panchayat’ and sent her back with lame excuses, it added.On Wednesday, Krishnamurthy called her from Stalin’s cell phone, asking her to come to the DMK office to collect her money.The following day, Sabira went to the office with her husband Saji and relative Regina. As usual, the trio resorted to a ‘katta panchayat’ and when she objected, Naga and Stalin tore her clothes and assaulted her. They also threatened her with dire consequences, said her complaint with the Saidapet police. The police have registered a case against Krishnamurthy, Stalin and Naga.Student drowns off Marina BeachA college student drowned at sea off the Marina on Kamarajar Salai on Friday. Kannadasan had come to India six months ago, while Chandra Ruban had come two years ago.“They had registered themselves at the local police station when they cameQ here to stay with their relatives in Madipakkam,” said an airport police official.During their time here they bought fake Indian passports from a man and had got caught when they had attempted to use them on Friday.“They said that they were going to work as supervisors. When we asked about the agent who had got them passports, they could only remember his name and nothing else,” added the police official.A case was booked against them and it was later transferred to the Central Crime Branch of the Suburban Police Commissionerate.
