THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National flags made of plastic lay crumpled or hung weakly from statues of eminent personages across the city on Tuesday morning, with no one caring to remove them after Monday’s Independence Day celebrations. All this, after Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had specifically instructed District Collectors on Saturday to ban national flags made of plastic. Discarding the national flag after use is a violation of the Indian Flag Code of Conduct 2002 and an act of disrespect. Two of the most shocking sights were at Martyrs’ Column and at the Kumaran Asan Memorial in front of the Kerala University HQ at Palayam. Crumpled flags lay in a bunch to one side of the column as two functions expressing solidarity with the cause of Anna Hazare were being held nearby. Almost all statues in the city had national flags made of plastic strung like festoons on them on Monday.Neither the City Corporation nor members of the public bothered to remove them after the celebrations. On Sunday evening and Monday, street vendors had sold the plastic flags undeterred by the Chief Minister’s orders for a ban.
