BANGALORE: The Rural IT Quiz organised by the Department. of IT, BT, Science and Technology, Govt of Karnataka in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) the leading IT Services, business solutions and outsourcing firm, witnessed a thrilling finals on October 19 in Bangalore.The Rural IT Quiz which had a successful run in Karnataka for over a decade, has now become a national program covering the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, besides Karnataka. The regional rounds of the program was conducted in all the States between August and October for students from grades eight to twelve.For a decade now the program has helped to enhance IT awareness amongst students, keeping them abreast of the latest developments in the world of IT, besides trying to narrow the gap between the urban and rural students. These six finalists battled it out at the National Finals conducted on 19th Oct. at Bangalore, where quizmaster Giri Balasubramaniam began the first round with Cryptic Bytes - a Crossword software with clues for teams to crack. This was followed by Visual Bytes, a visual round covering several aspects of computing and IT. Rapid Bytes, was a round on the buzzer. Lateral Bytes: A Connect round on the buzzer required teams to think out of the box. The final round was Bits and Bytes, a Multiple Clues round on the buzzer.The quiz showcased the knowledge of IT among students as they tackled the questions and amazed the audience by answering even the most difficult ones. After some intense quizzing, Swapnil U Mankame and Supreeth R, Rashtrothana Vidya Kendra, Dharwad emerged the winner with an impressive show. While the team from Palash Agrawal and Abhishek Naik, Atomic Energy Central School, Indore were the first runners up; Abhishek Bhattacharya and Dhaval Chauhan, DAV Public School, Ranchi were the second runners up. The national winners received a glittering trophy and cash scholarships of `75,000, first runners up `40,000 and second runners up `20,000, besides cellphones and Ipods. All the finalists also received `10,000, cellphones, Ipods and haversacks. The Rural IT Quiz has earned an entry in the Limca Book of Records as the first IT Quiz for rural students in India.S V Ranganath, Chief Secretary government of Karnataka who was the chief guest on the occasion gave away the prizes to the winners. M N Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary Department of IT, BT and S&T and e-Governance, GOK, Ramanamurthy Magapu, Vice President TCS BFS and V Narendra Leadership Group TCS were amongst those who graced the event. According to Nagaraj Ijari, VP and head TCS Bangalore Operations said, “The program has been promoting awareness, application and advancements in IT at grassroots level for over a decade. It provides an opportunity to students across India to learn about the developments in the world of IT.” Speaking on the occasion MN Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary to Government, Department of IT, BT and Science and Technology and e-Governance, Government of Karnataka, said “In our concerted efforts to promote IT among the rural youth we have scaled up the event to a National Level across the country. The response in the States of Gujarat and Maharashtra has been very good this year and we are sure the program will gather further momentum in the years ahead.”
