ALAPPUZHA: Resentment is brewing among the CPM cadre and sympathisers of V S Achuthanandan after he was denied a berth in the politburo, with some partymen quitting the party. On Tuesday, around 24 CPM activists from Vandanam and Neerkunnam local committee areas resigned from the party. The leaders who quit the party in Alappuzha - the home district of Achuthanandan - include CITU district committee member and CPM local committee member M Balan and Neerkunnam west local committee secretary P Pradeep. The party workers ardently support Achuthanandan as a leader. However, most of them toe the party line publicly. So, they are not ready to comment publicly.Unnikrishnan, a party member from Paravoor, said: “I believe in the image of VS. But, I am a party member and my duty is to act in the party’s interest. So I cannot publicly comment on the issue.”“VS is an ardent communist in his words and deeds. I know him from my childhood. He has never indulged in any corrupt practices. Some people are trying to trap him in the land allotment and appointment issues,” Unnikrishnan said.Balan, the CITU leader who quit the party on Tuesday, said: “I have been working for the party for more than three decades. I worked for the benefit of the party and not for my personal gains. VS has also been working for the party. His leadership helped CPM to a great deal in the last election. He is actively working for the party even at this age. He shows that age is not a hindrance to social service. So, the Central leaders should have given him a berth in the PB.” “The CPM is moving forward in the line of capitalism. Socialism is only in words. We labourers need the support of leaders like VS for our survival,” Balan said. Thomas of Thambakachuvadu, a sympathiser of VS, said: “I am not a CPM worker, but I believe in VS’ capability as a leader. He is a real socialist. Nobody can accuse him of any corruption charges in his 70-year political career. Though some charges were raised against him in recent times, I don’t believe in them. He is one of the few active political leaders in the CPM. So, the party should have accommodated him in the politburo.”According to Shiny, CPM Ambalappuzha former area committee member, “a large number of party members and workers had left the party earlier due to the stubborn attitude of the leaders. We expect more resignations in the coming days.”
