KANNUR: With the new government in the state ordering a probe into the faux pas of admission of candidates, the stage is set for another game of seesaw at the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital Society. The prevailing apprehension among the LDF circles, in the wake of the latest development on the issue, is that the government-sponsored probe into the alleged irregularities would pave the way for the eventual dissolution of the all-CPM director board of the PMC Society. They feel that the move is designed to bring the administration of the society back to the UDF. The disclosures regarding the irregularities in the admission of candidates came as the best opportunity to the UDF Government to strike at the CPM.At the same time, Health Minister Adoor Prakash has managed to wriggle himself out of the controversy by surrendering the medical PG seat offered to his daughter under the management quota. The claim of Adoor Prakash that he had paid only Rs 28 lakh to the college for the seat, flaunting a receipt issued by the management at a recent news conference, has triggered another controversy relating to the minister’s conduct and moral responsibilities. Causing further embarrassment to the Health Minister, CPM leader and chairman of the PMC Society M V Jayarajan stated on Friday that the college management had not received any information from the minister’s daughter surrendering the seat offered to her. Incidentally, it was CMP leader and architect of the PMC Society M V Raghavan who first came up with the demand to dissolve the director-board of the society in the wake of the scandal. Whether the ailing Raghavan, a firebrand Communist of yesteryears, is ready to launch another battle to regain control of his cherished establishment is extremely doubtful. He is neither a minister nor an MLA now. He has a government in the state to support him, but there is little vigour left in the former spit-fire politician to wage another battle against the powerful CPM.The CPM and its youth outfit DYFI are on a hectic face-saving operation following the disclosures with regard to the NRI seat offered to the daughter of DYFI state treasurer V V Ramesan. The political embarrassment caused to the party by its youth leader couldn’t be easily explained away by the CPM leadership. Meanwhile, the CPM leadership is closely monitoring the situation following the announcement of a three-member probe team by the UDF Govt. Polls to the director-board of the PMC Society had always been marked with violence in the past. It had also caused serious law and order situation in the region. Dissolution of the existing elected body or a forcible takeover of the administration of the society is, perhaps, the last thing the CPM expects from the Oommen Chandy-led govt.
