Unseasonal rains and drought in certain parts of Telangana are leading to farmer's committing suicides. A cotton farmer Jaggolla Mallesham on Sunday committed suicide as he was unable to repay his loans.
He even took up a job as a security guard to repay the loans but the drought pushed him deeper into debt forcing him to take the extreme step.
"He could not repay the loan, he asked everyone for the money. He use to grow cotton but poor rainfall has hit the production," Mallesham's relative said.
The rainfall shortage in Telangana is above 40% this season. It has triggered the fear of a drought across the state.
Telangana government on Saturday hiked the ex-gratia being paid to families of farmers who have committed suicide due to distress like low crop yield or indebtedness to Rs 6 lakh from Rs 1.5 lakh.
