Whether it is jumbos dancing to the tune of music or girls precariously swinging from trapezes, nothing is as awe-inspiring as circus. But the City Corporation doesn’t feel so as it is sticking to its earlier decision of not allowing the circus companies to raise tents at Putherikandam Maidan, saying that it would damage the newly-renovated ground. With this decision, the fate of circus in the city is sealed as no other venue here could house the enormous tent and other facilities required for conducting circus, the mother of all entertainment programmes.
According to managers of various circus companies, there is no such venue as Putharikandam in the city that is suitable to conduct circus. This dearth of performing venues has forced the circus companies to move to rural areas in search of space.
Basheer Rawther, the manager of Rajkamal Circus, said that for the last five years, the City Corporation has been denying permission to hold circus at Putherikandam Maidan. “During the first three years, they said that since renovation works were going on, they couldn’t give the ground. Now after the completion of the work, they are saying that the renovated facility couldn’t be given to circus as it would damage the ground. This is not right as circus, which is already facing a crisis, will be struck severely by this decision,” he said.
He added that revenue gets hit when circus is taken to rural areas. “Now we are organising it (circus) on Mamom ground, near Attingal, on the invitation of Attingal municipal council. Onam festival will be incomplete sans circus. Why doesn’t the City Corporation understand this?“ he asked.
Last year, Gemini Circus, another renowned circus company, had to move to Balaramapuram for the same reason. Circus lovers feel that the decision of the Corporation will deal a body blow to hundreds of people engaged in the profession.
But the City Corporation is in no mood to repeal its decision. For, it has strong reasons to support its stand. It has spent more than Rs 4.5 crore in beautifying the Maidan. “We don’t want to damage the ground by allowing people to hold the circus there. It will be an insult to the exchequer if we allow circus groups to damage the ground, which was built on the former’s tax contribution,” Mayor K Chandrika sounded firm.
But the representatives of the circus companies counter this, saying that if they cause any damage to the ground, then compensation can be drawn from the amount that they provide to the Corporation as deposit.
