In an expeditious follow-up action drive following the death of an eight- year-old girl who was run over by a truck after she skidded on a sand littered road in Adambakkam, the Chennai Corporation has booked as many as 54 cases against persons who dumped construction materials on the road.
On April 21, D Madhumitha, a class III Student of GK Shetty Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School was killed on the spot when a mini truck rammed her when she was cycling back home. According to residents, the incident would not have happened had the road been cleared.
Following the incident, the Chennai Corporation instructed builders and house owners not to misuse road space for storing construction material or dump building debris. As such illegal use of road space even lead to fatal accidents, the civic body warned of tough action and the fine amount was also raised from `500 to `2000.
“We have stepped up our vigilance and are actively trying to stop such things from happening. We will take stringent action against anyone flouting the norms. More than `3,40,000 has been collected as fine,” said Chennai Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan.
Maximum fines were collected from zones 13, five and 10 with zone 12 alone coughing up ` 32,000 to the Corporation’s treasury.
Joint Commissioner (Health) Pooja Kulkarni said, “Adyar is on the top of the list for most fines collected in that zone.”
Construction material like sand, gravel, bricks. pipes etc all come under the ‘debris’ category.
Pooja said that it was the responsibility of property owners to ensure that the construction material did not spill on to the road.
